Bites of Inequality – Deutsche Wohnen & Co enteignen
On the housing crisis and the socialisation of large real estate companies: how Berlin tenants are campaigning for a better housing industry.

It is difficult to imagine solutions to the socio-economic and ecological problems we currently face as societies, as many issues seem to lie beyond the remit of democratic governance. In this context, the initiative 'Deutsche Wohnen & Co. enteignen' is an exception: a civil society project that raises expectations and hopes for a fairer system of housing provision. Individuals should not be condemned to live in fear of losing their homes and cities to investors; instead, it should be possible to conceive of solutions that bring genuine relief from high rents and the joy of working together with tenants and other groups. In this talk, Marina Mironica and Benedikt Heyl provide an overview of DWE and how other cities could learn from this Berlin initiative.
