A Friday afternoon with Christina Cross. Origins, opportunities, reality.

Christina Cross shows how much origin shapes our everyday lives and why the same family forms can still lead to completely different opportunities. In Inherited Inequality, she makes visible why Black and White children in the US often grow up in two different realities. Her book reading event at the "Lost Weekend" invites everyone to join in the discussion and take away new perspectives.

What role does our origins play in daily life. How does it shape the opportunities that we have. And what does that say about the society in which we live. Christina Cross, a sociologist at Harvard University, talks about exactly this during her visit to Munich.

In her book Inherited Inequality Cross shows why life paths can differ significantly despite the same family form. Her investigation of how the opportunities of Black and White children in two-parent families differ and what these differences reveal about the effect of resources and structural conditions is particularly central.

Christina Cross reads selected passages from her book and then talks to Professor Fabian Pfeffer about the consequences of these findings for our understanding of opportunity and justice. Together, they open up new perspectives in inequality research and the question of what origin actually means in everyday life.

The audience is invited to think and join in the discussion. Students in particular have the opportunity to contribute their own experiences and questions and to think about larger social relationships together.

A Friday afternoon that not only imparts knowledge, but hopefully also opens doors. For conversations that stick around and thoughts that you take with you into the weekend.
