ISI ´s Inequality Bookclub – Ungleich vereint
The first ISI reading group is here! To mark the 37th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, we are discussing "Ungleich vereint - Warum der Osten anders bleibt" by Steffen Mau.

Enjoy a drink while discussing books that explore various forms of inequality – that’s the new ISI Book Club!
We’re kicking things off with a text that remains highly relevant to the recurring East-West debate: 9 November marks the 37th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since then, East and West have converged in many ways, such as in wages and life expectancy. Furthermore, not all social inequality follows the old border; many people in North Rhine-Westphalia are also affected by poverty.
Nevertheless, comparisons often focus on the differences, especially when looking at the recent electoral successes of the AfD. Sociologist Steffen Mau argues that these differences are not merely imagined. The East is different – economically, politically, and in terms of mentality and identity. And it will remain so for the foreseeable future.
What has grown together, what remains different – and why? We want to discuss this with you.
Read the book, come along, and join the discussion!
Please note: This event will be held in German.
The ISI Inequality Book Club is not a university event – it is open to anyone who has read the book and registered. We look forward to seeing you there!
