Fabian Kalleitner explores when people support welfare cuts or tax increases during times of fiscal stress. Research on redistribution preferences often debates whether people favor policies that serve their own interests, or align with their fairness beliefs. Using survey-experimental data from Austria, Kalleitner shows that self-interest matters more when policies clearly signal their impact on people’s costs and benefits.
